 An Isohyet map like the one above has lines that show equal levels throughout the map. Generally this type of map refers to water levels and precipitation.

This is a wind rose that is commonly used by meteorologists to view wind speed and the direction it is traveling. These use to be very common on older maps but arte no longer actively used except by meteorologists.

 This isopleth map is very similar to a chloropleth map. The contour lines depict variables that can’t normally be measured at a point, but uses the data collected in the area to make calculations.

This is a similarity matrix that compares the percent similarity between random strains in a scientific study. This type of map is very useful in scientific studies comparing similar yet different variables.

 This is a map of lower Manhattan New York in LIDAR. This optical remote sensing technology is not only useful when wishing to view the city as above, but it is also used by police force with their radar guns.

Triangular Plot

This is a triangular plot because it depicts the ratios of three variables. The variables represented in this map are oxygen, nitrogen, and methane. It also shows how the percentages and mixtures of these three can result in flammable mixtures.

 As many people would commonly recognize this is a Doppler radar of a hurricane. This type of map is very common on the weather channel and very known in Florida where we have hurricanes very often in the season.

This is a climograph that shows the temperature to precipitation comparison for the city of Boulder, Colorado. This a great example for this type of map as it is a graph that adequately represents the climate of the city.

This is a very basic inex value plot that shows the wetness of North Caronlina over a 45 day peiod. The average streamflow index appears to be not heavily fluctuating over this time period as it was not excessively hot and they did not appear to receive much rainfall except for what seems to be the last week of March.

This cartogram shows the value by area of amphibians in each country. It sows how South America is very heavy in its diversity of these animals whereas further north and in Europe there is not as much variance.

This is a DLG map of the United States where general elevation and terrain is shown. This map in my opinion is probably the coolest of them all showing some very fascinating information.

 This star plot shows the sun and how far in distance various stars our from it. Unfortunately I am not very knowledgeable in the astronomy so I do not quite understand the distance readings.

An isoline map is a map with continuous lines joining points of the same value. This isoline map shows the average temperatures across the US over a given week in May of 2001.

Nominal Area Chloropleth Map

This map shows various states and their election victory value along with the prediction of the state will vote based on its color. This map shows nominal data and uses color to portray data also and thus qualifies as a nominal area chloropleth map.

This chloropleth map shows the percentages of whites in each state. It is a chloropleth map because it shows data in certain areas using shading.

This standardized chloropleth map is quite basic and shows the percentages of children under 14 in Canada. This is a chloropleth map because it is a map that shos an average according to a specified area.

Dot Distribution Maps

This dot distribution map shows the amount of birds counted by bird watchers in North America during the 2000-2001 season. This univariate map is similar to a bivariate map except it doesn’t show two variables so the information that can be displayed is limited by that. This map however shows water usage in the US.

This map measures global happiness across the world based on the nations GDP. This map qualifies as bivariate because it shows two variables on a map using various sets of colors and shadings.

As the website from the link clearly explains when entitling this map “Hypsometric maps represent the elevation of the terrain with colors. The area between two neighboring contour lines receives one specific tint.” This map is of France and shows the change in terrain and how the western side of the country has a relatively lower elevation.

An unclassed chloropleth map generally uses shading of specified areas to present data to the viewer. This map is an unclasses chloropleth map and it shows the population changes in the US over time.

This range graded map shows the amount of Mexican’s in the western and central states of America. This map is good when one wants to view statistics on a map without just seeing the numbers printed.

Thematic Maps

A thematic map is generally designed to show a specific theme. This map following that theory is designed to portray soil moisture across the U.S. This map emphasizes the premier locations for farming.

Continuously variable proportional circle map

These two maps are both continuously variable proportional maps and both maps also represent the motor vehicle deaths in the state of California. Topographic Map

This is a topographic map of Iowa City. It is very detailed and informative to the viewer of the map. This Digitally elevated map shows the elevation from sea level of the North East.
